Federal Agency Issues Legionella Risk Reduction Requirements for Medicare/Medicaid Certified Facilities

July 24, 2017

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, CMS, issued a memorandum on June 02, 2017, requiring at risk Medicare/Medicaid certified facilities to conduct Legionella Risk assessments and implement water management programs.

CMS later clarified on June 09, 2017, that the new requirements specifically apply to Medicare certified Hospitals, Critical Access Hospitals, and Long-Term Care Facilities.

The announcement was in response to a 286% increase of reported Legionnaires cases in the U.S. from 2000 to 2014. With a large percentage of those cases reported in long-term care facilities and hospitals.

Patients most at risk for Legionnaires Pneumonia:

  • 50 and older

  • smokers

  • chronic lung disease

  • immunosuppression
